The FRH20SMN is a compact hollow-body acoustic-electric guitar. It uses a modified FR body with fan bracing, a design borrowed from classical guitars, and has no sound hole in the top. This reduces feedback when amplified. A side sound port lets the player hear the guitar's tone more directly. The top is spalted maple, the back and sides are sapele, and the set-in neck is nyatoh with a rosewood fretboard and bridge.

The neck has a C profile with a 46mm nut width and a 400mm fretboard radius, which keeps fingering easy. The body is thin, with good access to the upper frets. The guitar is strung with D'Addario XTC45 strings and has gold classical-style tuners, a bone nut and a bone saddle. The finish is Tobacco Burst Low Gloss.

For amplification it has an Ibanez undersaddle pickup and the AEQ210T preamp with an onboard tuner. The preamp has volume, treble and bass knobs, a tuner button and a phase button.
