The Saturn-R is a CD player and DAC in a single full-width unit. The transport and the DAC circuit are independent, and both can be operated from the supplied Solaris remote handset, which also carries amplifier functions. A pair of Wolfson WM8742 converter chips handle digital-to-analogue conversion, with an enhanced output amplifier stage and reworked analogue and digital outputs.
For external sources there are two optical inputs, two coaxial inputs and an asynchronous USB input, all supporting resolutions up to 192kHz/24-bit. A direct digital output from the CD playback section is also provided. The USB input is galvanically isolated and runs asynchronously at 44.1 to 192kHz. Switching between CD and DAC functions takes place in the converter stage, which keeps the CD signal path short.
The CD circuitry uses a high-stability master clock and a high-capacity power supply, while the DAC section uses a PLL digital interface receiver, isolated digital inputs and its own power supply design. Windows needs a dedicated USB driver, which is not required on macOS. The unit is presented as a companion to the Rega Elicit-R integrated amplifier.
