The EL-8 Titanium is a closed-back, over-ear headphone built around a planar magnetic transducer. The diaphragm is very thin and several times larger than in typical headphones. Uniforce voice-coil technology spreads the driving force evenly across it, Fluxor magnet arrays concentrate the magnetic flux, and Fazor elements guide internal sound waves to limit resonance.
The body uses a custom aluminum frame, a floating headband and faux leather, with industrial design by Designworks, a BMW Group subsidiary. The headphone is light for its class at 540 g and folds flat for carrying.
It is designed to work with Audeze's Cipher Lightning cable, which has an inline chip that bypasses the iPhone's internal DAC and amp, streams 24-bit audio to an external DAC with DSP, and includes a Siri-compatible microphone for calls. The Audeze iOS app adds a 10-band real-time equalizer with two presets that are stored in the cable and move with it between devices.
