The Hot Wax joins two EHX overdrive circuits in a single analog pedal: the Crayon, a full-range overdrive, and the Hot Tubes, a reissue of a 1970s CMOS overdrive. Each side has its own footswitch and LED, so either can be used alone or both together, with the Crayon driving the Hot Tubes when stacked.
A shared EQ section offers Bass and Treble knobs, and a Blend knob mixes the dry signal with the overdriven signal, which is especially useful on bass. These three controls work whenever one or both overdrive sections are on and are bypassed when both are off. When only the Crayon is active its Vol knob sets the master level; with both active it sets the balance between the two sections.
The pedal has a single 1/4" input and a single 1/4" output for mono operation, uses buffered bypass with pop-free switching, and runs from the included 9.6VDC 200mA power adapter, drawing 75mA.
